Abraham Lincoln and the Forging of Modern America

Two one-week workshops for 100 school teachers on Abraham Lincoln and his role in American history, using sites in and near Springfield, Illinois.

This is a proposal for a two one-week workshops at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) and nearby historic sites associated with Abraham Lincoln in and around Springfield, Illinois. To provide teachers with an opportunity to engage in rich scholarly discussion, this workshop begins on our university campus with lectures and interactive discussions with two noted Lincoln scholars. Following these discussions our workshop participants will travel to several historic Lincoln landmarks in Springfield. A musuem studies expert and an African-American historian will provide additional lectures. Our workshop provides a unique collaboration in which teachers are immersed in the investigation of infuences contributing to forging both an Amnerican President and the modern era that followed.
