Crossroads of Empire: Old Fort Niagara
Two one-week Landmarks workshops for eighty school teachers that focus on the interaction and mutual influence of Iroquois, European, and North American colonists at Old Fort Niagara.
Old Fort Niagara is one of the most significant eighteenth-century military sites in the United States, and is among the nation's oldest extant fortifications. It served as a vital crossroads between the empires of the Iroquois Great League of Peace, France, Great Britain, and, later, the United States as they battled each other for control of the North American continent. Niagara University proposes two, one-week workshops in July 2011 to study the interaction between native peoples and Europeans at this significant history site, with an emphasis on the ways in which each culture influenced the other, as part of the NEH's 'Bridging Cultures' initiative.
