The Lessons of History: Using EDSITEment to Teach American Political History

A three-year program to develop 75 lesson plans for EDSITEment.

The Lessons of History proposes to extend EDSITEment's usefulness to teachers and students of U.S. history in the high school by developing seventy-five lesson plans (over a three year period, approximately 25 per year) that draw upon EDSITEment's reviewed websites along with the creation of an equal number of accompanying interactive exercises for students. All together these lessons organized in eleven curriculum units will offer teachers and students a variety of lessons over three centuries of U.S. history, anchored in a chronologial political span, but one that integrates a variety of conceptual, methodological, and documentary approaches. A Board of distinguished historians and educators will advise and review materials, while a working group of consulting historians at the City University of New York will team up with secondary school editors to develop and write the web-based lesson plans. These exercises will be developed by our partner, The American Social History Project/Center for Media and Learning (Graduate Center, City University of New York) and feature a series of new software tools for text and image annotation and collection, produced by our other partner, the Center for History and New Media (George Mason University). All lesson plans and student activities will address high school audiences with academic rigor, up-to-date scholarship, and technical accessibility.
