Janice, here is a brief overview of what we would like to do:

the current principle account balance for this endowment is $482,826, earning approximately $26,000 per year to support publication of books on Latin American and Indigenous cultures.

Due to changes in our business office when the Press became part of the University of Arizona Libraries in 2010, annual earnings were not expended as usual for several years. NEH support was acknowledged in dozens of titles during those years but funds were never transferred. Consequently, we have accumulated a large balance in our payout account.

We are requesting permission to transfer $100,000 from our payout account into the principle account. The resulting principle account of $582,826 would provide an additional $3,000 – 4,000 of payout funds per year.

Best,
Kathryn

Hi, Kathryn—

Can you tell me what you mean by “recapitalize?” Please provide a brief summary of the university’s plans.

Thanks,

Jan

Thanks, Joyce. I can’t seem to find many records about the original grant so anything you can share will be very helpful.

Kathryn

Dear Janice,

Brett Bobley gave me your name as a contact for a question I have about an endowment created by an NEH Challenge Grant to the University of Arizona Press in the early 1990s. The endowment earnings support books having to do with Latin American and Native American cultures and Income from the endowment has supported the publication of hundreds and hundreds of books over the years. At this point we have some accumulated earnings that we would like to recapitalize in order to increase our earnings in future years. The University of Arizona Foundation would like to verify that this is okay with the funder. In this case, NEH was the largest funder of the endowment, having provided (I believe) 25% of the endowment investment.

Could you advise if this is possible?

Best,
Kathryn
