Maynard Mack (Project Director: June 1974 to present)

National Institute for the Humanities

To establish a National Institute devoted to interdisciplinary study and teaching, under the general theme "The Humanities and the National Life." The activities of each of the three operational years of the Institute would be unified by a sub-theme: in the first year, "American Roots;" in the second year, "Humanistic Values;" in the final year, "Educational Applications." The specific problems proposed for the work of the Institute indicate an intellectual progression in the formulation of problems, as well as a general cohesiveness over the three years. Professors will return to their repsective universities to teach following their study at their institute.
