College Library Program

Program of graduate Reference Assistants to aid Brown University undergraduates in their independent studies, individual reading and research programs. Under new curriculum adopted by Brown, courses require students to make heavy use of library materials, both for regular class assignments and for reports. Undergraduates must be helped to approach the library as a research library rather than as an undergraduate collection. ABSTRACT: Brown University undergraduates increasingly pursuing independent studies, individual reading and research programs, requiring assistance of a more specialized character than even well-trained reference librarians can normally be expected to supply. This problem accelerated under the new curriculum adopted by Brown, since new courses require studdents to make heavy use of library materials, both for regular class assignments and for reports. Undergraduates must approach the library as a research library rather than as an undergraduate collection. Undergraduate possess little or none of the bibliographic expertise of the researcher. Special assistance must be made available, but such assistance cannot always be provided by conventionally-trained librarians, since it requires knowledge of the substantive content and methodology of specialized fields. Therefore, students given access to advanced graduate students in the library, serving as Reference Assistants. Funds for assistant research librarian, to compensate for time spent by Chief Research Librarian in supervising research assistants and for 8-12 research assistants, 1970-75. Made possible through matching funds from the Council in Library Resources.
