The Continuing Significance of Tocqueville's DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA

A two-week institute for twenty-five college and university teachers to examine the concepts of equality, individualism, and the social state found in Tocqueville's DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA, to be held at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The National Association of Scholars will conduct a two-week summer institute for college and university teachers to do an intensive study of Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America" and its enduring importance to American democracy. The institute will concentrate on Tocqueville's notion of "the social state," which he calls the "point of departure" for his entire analysis of American democracy. Lectures and discussions will highlight issues of major consequence to the "social state" in both Tocqueville's text and today--equality, religion, and civic association. Guided by faculty consultants, the institute's participants will read and discuss major selections from "Democracy in America," along with recent writings by contemporary American writers on the same issues. The institute is designed to attract both Tocqueville specialists and those who teach the book in general introductions to American history and culture.
