College for Human Service Project

2-year college-level program to train residents of inner-city communities for new careers as assistants to professionals in schools, hospitals, legal offices and social agencies. ABSTRACT: Planning, implementation and evaluation of second-year curriculum of a 2-year college-level program educating mature residents of inner-city communities for new careers as assistants to professionals in schools, hospitals, legal offices and social agencies. Talent Corps began as a one-year training program but student interest in further education was apparent by the end of the first year. Talent corps has applied to N.Y. State Board of Regents for charter as 2-year College for Human Service. Core curriculum previous developed and implemented for freshman year; second year taught within traditional disciplines. Freshman curriculum: 1) principles of human growth and development with strong emphasis on emotional, philosophical and moral aspects; 2) examination of man in groups and various ways men have attempted to formulate ideal societies; 3) application of concepts and theories from preceding units to particular characteristics of specific community; 4) theoretical and practical aspects of social change. Focus throughout on problem-analysis, understanding of interdependence of factors, practical applications of academic theories. Funds to extend core curriculum to second year.
