ABSTRACT: Funds to complete development of six-week unit on Ancient Greece as part of social studies and humanities course for seventh grade; presently being tested in two junior high classrooms in Massachusetts. Unit gives students solid introduction to Greek history and culture and provides them with perspective from which to view conflict and change, dominant characteristics of contemporary times. Focus is on the Athens-Sparta conflict in fifth century A.D., presented as a clash between the fundamental values and institutions of the two city-states. Examines cultural differences through study of their educational systems and explores effects of Peloponnesian War on the internal changes in each society. As an active approach to the study of history, program relies primarily on humanistic materials and visual aids. Project plans are to develop final field test of program for five to ten classrooms and revise program on basis of the teaching trial. Extensive evaluation by students and teachers will precede revision. Workshops, teaching guide and materials will also be provided. Funds for salaries and wages, travel and subsistence, consultants, operating costs.
