Writers-in-the-Schools Program

Program involving professional writers in teaching literature, reading and writing at the elementary and secondary level. ABSTRACT: Writers-in-the-Schools Program designed to involve professional writers in education process at elementary and secondary levels. Writers relate literature, reading and language to the daily life of the students making it more relevant. Inspire creativity among students. Writers work with teacher to integrate their scheduled visits into the rest of the students' learning. Grantee also publishes newletters documenting program and student creations; developing programs and aids for other schools. Curriculum and text in traditional english classes bear little relation to students' lives. Language, characters, experiences, emotions depicted are remote from feelings and experiences of real children. Teachers often feel this lack but are hampered by lack of training and materials. Program designed on following principles; 1) children allowed to develop language naturally, without imposition of formal grammar rules, are encouraged to explore language, literature; 2) grammatical and spelling skills develop from attaching to literature, not vice versa; 3) children who write own literature and read productions of other children tend to view all literature as an effort to deal with one's experience in creative ways.
