John Steinbeck: Voice of a Region, Voice for America
A two-week institute for twenty-five school teachers focusing on the life and work of John Steinbeck.
During the summer of 2007, we propose to bring 25 high school teachers to Monterey, California, “Steinbeck Country,” to be immersed in a summer institute focusing on Steinbeck’s life, work, and region. The primary goal of the program is to ground participants’ understanding of John Steinbeck’s work in a social, geographical, historical, and literary context, to increase readers’ cultural awareness of the impact of his work. We will arrive at a broad appreciation of a writer who himself embraced a “holistic” sense of man’s place in the world.
