Modern German Poetry

Study of modern German poetry, using a combination of historical, theoretical and aesthetic apporaches. Study will outline cultural developments in the 19th century which created the pre-conditions for modern poetry in Germany. ABSTRACT: Study of modern German poetry, using a combination of historical, theoretical and aesthetic apporaches. Outline cultural developments in the 19th century which created the pre-conditions for modern poetry in Germany. Summary of aesthetic theories from German classicism to present with special emphasis on the impact of French symbolism and of modern Anglo-American writers. Refutes those critics who consider contemporary poetry destructive to the humanistic tradtion. Designed to show American students of German that the comtemporary German lyricists struggled with the same fundamental problems of human exsistence that haunt the younger generation in this country.
