American Indian Policy, 1860-1900

History of relations between US government and the American Indians with concentration of period 1860-1900. Emphasis on confrontation of two cultures, the resultant legislative and regulatory provisions adopted by the federal government for Indian affairs, and the effects of these measures on the Indians. Knowledge of history of American Indian relations is of national imporatnce. No satisfactory solutions to problems of Indians in modern American society can be attained without understanding of historical background of the Indians' relations with the US. Fellow has previously completed a detailed study of American Indian policy up to 1835 (American Indian Policy in the Formative Years, 1962) and plans eventually to write a comprehensive history of American Indian policy from the begininning of the nation to the present.
