Black Towns on the American Frontier

To assess the historical significance of about 200 black "towns," i.e., municipalities governed by blacks and more than 90% populated by them during some historical period and similarly populated unincorporated settlements. The study is the first large work on black towns on a regional or national basis and a rare non-statistical look at black migratory patterns, even thought these towns have ranged from 100 to 10,000 in population and have been located in 30 states and every region except New England.
