The Archaeological Drawings of Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1439-1501)

To edit, for the first time, the archeological drawings of the Sienese artist Francesco di Giorgio Martini, and evaluate the role of his predilection for antique architecture and the literature of Vitruvius in the development of late Quattrocento archaeology. di Giorgio is distinctive among architects of his time for the rational and systematic technical investigtion of classical architecture and its ancient literature. In his time humanitists began to view classical monuments for their aestetic qualities rather than their mere historical value. This study integrates these two side of Renaissance culture.
