Late Medieval Literary Theory

To write a book defining and describing, in comprehensive terms, the theory of literature held in the later Middle Ages. In addition to theoretical manuals of the time, such as Geoffrey of Vinsauf's Poetria Nova and Averroes' "Aristotelian" Poetics. the evidence for the study will include a great deal from the practical and interpretative writings of actual medieval critics, preserved largely in anonymous glasses and marginalia. This medieval theory's distinctive for three reasons: because of the major place it gives to ethics, because it tends to break down practical distinctions between history and fiction and because It presumes allegory rather than causality as the primary device of structure and unity in fictions.
