Major Anglo-Irish Writers of the 19th and 20th Century

To conduct research for a book about the major Anglo-Irish writers of the 19th and 20th century, including Maria Edgeworth, Edith Somerville and Martin Ross, George Moore, J. M. Synge, and W. B. Yeats. The aim of the study is three-folds 1) to discriminate a very rich "Anglo-Irish" tradition; 2) to explore the divided consciousness of these writers who are spokespersons of a dominant minority class and culture-sensitive to the sufferings and frustrations of the "native" majority, and haunted by the "nightmare" of Irish conditions and Irish history generally; 3) to emphasize in critical scrutiny and investigation of continuities and relationships among texts the greatest works of the tradition.
