The Making of an "Establishment," 1540-1560

To trace the origins of an "establishment in British political history between 1540-1560. "Establishment" has been defined as a set of informal relationships of trust among persons near centers of power. The study should help clarify the development of a professional civil service during the reign of Edward VI, and the transition from earlier to more modern social relationships. The existence of a network of trusted friends, at or near the center of power, will also help explain how Puritanism was able to become so deeply rooted during the Elizabethan period.
