George Eliot and the Visual Arts

To examine the use of the visual arts to set scenes, describe characters and develop themes in the art-fiction of novelist George Eliot. Grantee's study will include a statement on methods, continue with a biographical chapter, a description of Eliot's tastes, and an account of the role of pictorialism in her aesthetic theory, concluding with chapters on specific novels and specific kinds of painting and a discussion of literary illustrations. Grantee believes the book would make contributions both to George Eliot criticism and to the study of the sister arts in general.
