Adolescents in Social Change in the People's Republic of China

Relying on content analysis of Red Chinese publications and supplemental interviewing of refugees, this study traces the developmental process, since the Revolution, of utilizing adolescents in mass campaigns and the variances in the behavior of youth over time. Interviewing former Red Guards in Hong Kong, Grantee intends to ask two major questions; 1) What do the behavioral patterns of youth in the Cultural Revolution tell us about the difficulties in resolving the internal conflict between rebelliousness and submission to authority? 2) how might the variances in the origins of politically channeled adolescent rebelliousness pose psychological problems for frustrated participants and at the same time threaten the equilibrium of a society which must remain authoritarian?
