Lysimachus, King of Thrace

To study the life and reign of Lysimachus, ruler of Thrace from 323 B.C. to 281 B.C. tracing the rise and fall of his Kingdom which at the time of his death encompassed eastern Rumania, Bulgaria, much of northern Greece and all of European and Asian Turkey. Grantee will show that the rise of this powerful state was a disruptive factor in the political affairs of the Near East during the third century while in Europe it provided a secure environment which allowed the Greek cities of the northern Balkans to prosper facilitating the diffusion of Greek culture among the non-Greek peoples of modern Bulgaria. The study will also trace the impact of Lysimachus’ kingdom has on the intellectual life of European Greece.
