Illiteracy in the U.S., 1840-1870

To study the social, economic, and political consequences of illiteracy in the United States in the middle of the nineteenth century. There were sizeable numbers of men and women in certain regions of the country who were thus handicapped because they were unable to read or write the simplest of words or sentences.
