Israel and American Jewry

To explore developments in the attitude toward the American Zionist movement by the Jewish community in the United States within an historic framework. The main focus of the study will be on the tensions result in from a new ethnic consciousness in America that has led a third generation of American Jews to re-establish their Jewish identity while at the same time affirming their complete assimilation as Americans. Since 1948, all but a fringe element of the American Jewish community has been strongly supportive of the State of Israel, bringing strong pressure to bear on the U.S. government to support Israel during times of crisis and war.
