Women as Organizers and Administrators: An Unexamined Role

To examine the work of women as organizers and administrators of selected organizations between 1830 and 1900, to examine the importance of this hitherto largely unexamined form of women's work for the shaping of American social history, to add to the number of roles women are known to have filled in the past, that of institution builders, and to show how a social group, cut off from certain areas of social action may move to develop alternative areas in which to use talents and energies. A collective biography of 200 such women is to be developed comparing their organizational and administrative styles with those of their male contemporaries, assessing the significance of their work for the shaping of American social patterns, and for the women themselves.
