The Architecture of American Fourierism and Its Influence, 1840-1900

To examine the built and un-built work of the self-styled "Social Architects" of American Fourierism. Grantee will consider the impact of this group on American asylums, penitentiaries, factories, apartment houses and parks. To be also explored are the ways in which the development of the political economy of the United States between 184O and 1900 influenced the reception of Fourierist ideas. The implication for 20th century architecture and social movement will also be examined.
