The English Landed Elite in the Nineteenth Century

To study the transformation of the English landed elite in the nineteenth century, explaining the decline and fall of the British aristocracy by considering such matters as the role of religion, the changes in land laws, relations between the landed elite and parts of the middle classes such as the farmers and the professions, and perhaps most importantly, the innovative role of the landed elite in politics. A comparative perspective of the English landed aristocracy with other European elites is also being drawn.
