A Critical Edition of the Manuscript Versions of Francisco de Quevedo's "Suenos y discursos" and his "La hora de todos"

The "Suenos" or "Visions of Hell" are 5 lengthy satirical versions of Spain written between 1605 and 1621 by the major Spanish baroque writer, Francisco de Quevedo (1580-1645). As classics of Spanish literature, they have been published over 100 times in the 20th century alone; but only in the corrupted versions heavily censored by the Inquisition in 1627 and 1631. These manuscripts will now be studied in a systematic: and comprehensive way, using microfilms, comparing them word by word, establishing an authentic text and recording all of the variants. This study proposes to clarify linguistic problems, identify sources, including literary, cultural and historical phenomena, explain difficult passages, making the work a coordinated whole.
