Palace of the Buen Retiro

This study of the Palace of the Buen Retiro, Madrid, has two purposes: to document and reconstruct the history of the major building project of the reign of Philip IV and to study the palace and its decoration as expressions of prevailing political thought and circumstances. The Retiro Palace was constructed for the most part from 1629 to 1635, a critical period in the history of the Spanish Hapsburg Empire. The project is being done in collaboration with Professor John H. Elliott, Institute for Advanced Study.
