Clemont-Ferrand, 1939-1945; One French Town's Response to War and Occupation

To investigate the reactions of the people in a French town, Clermont-Ferrand, to war and defeat, the Vichy Regime, and the German occupation. Period to be examined is from 1939 to 1945 and material to be studied will come from the local archives at the Prefecture and City Hall; records of the German occupation authorities to be found in the National Archives, Washington, D.C., and in Freiburg, Germany. The results of the study will provide insight into the nature and significance of collaboration and resistance, assess the extent of grass roots support for the Vichy Regime, and explain any significant contrasts in response from individuals or groups of different social class or ideological persuasion.
