Immigration and American Power in the Long 20th Century

A study of the relationship between U.S. foreign policy and immigration policy from the 1890s to the present.

This project involves the completion of a full draft of my book in progress, Immigration and American Power in the Long 20th Century, which integrates the history of US immigration policy and the history of US foreign relations from the advent of Chinese exclusion in the late 19th century, to the post-9/11 immigration policy changes. In particular, it uses US immigration policy as a lens onto the United States' changing presence and power in the world, highlighting struggles over sovereignty, the question of how national boundaries ought to be determined in an increasingly interconnected world.
