Ancient Iconoclasm: Destroying the Power of Images in Greece, 480-31 B.C.

This proposal requests support for my new book project, "Ancient iconoclasm: Destroying the power of images in Greece, 480-31 B.C." The book will be the first comprehensive historical investigation of iconoclasm in ancient Greek society. Previous scholars have characterized the destruction of images in the classical world as a limited and marginal phenomenon, carried out chiefly by barbarians and other social outcasts. Through my research, I have come to the conclusion that it was in fact pervasive, varied in motivation, and practiced at all social levels. This has important implications for our understanding of the role of the image in Greek society. A fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities would allow me to complete the final two of the book's central chapters as well as research for the introduction; in so doing, it would facilitate and speed publication of the book.
