Aesthetic and intellectual trends in Spanish literature from 1898 to 1936

ABSTRACT: Study of the changes in artistic, philosophical and social perceptions in Spanish literature between 1898 and the Spanish Civil War. Fellow sees two general patterns of thought, one typical of the generation of 1898, the other of the two generations that followed. The prevelant but not always conscious model in the thinking of the 1898 writers is a disassociation of private and public, a distinction between a real self and a public mask. The next two generations represent a move away from subjectivity, eliminating the dichotomy between subject and object. Study focuses on outstanding authors from each period.
