Character Development and Diffusion of Neo-Classical Architecture in England

Study of English Neo-classical architecture from its inception in the 1750s to its transformation into full-scale Romantic Classicism around 1800. Fellow to conduct systematic examination of major collections of architectural drawings in London and throughout British Isles; Fstudy of existing buildings and comparison of drawings, executed works, and literary references. Comparative study of designs of various architects when engage on the same of similar projects and investigation of such specific problems as the nature of change in the Neo-classical architectural style around 1790, the role of the mausoleum in archtectural conceptions, and the influence of Robert Adams on the archtiects of the 1790-1800 period. Fellow's previous research dealt with work of Robert Adams (1728-1792), one of the major figure in the New-classical movement and one of the important innovators of the style.
