Pacifism in Germany, 1900-1914

Analysis of the reception in Germany of international pacifist ideas and the groups that advocated them during the period immediately prior to World War I. Previous research by fellow had indicated that attempts by German pacifists to win support for international arbitration and limitation of armaments met with persistent failure as statesmen, politicians, editors, clergymen and educators responded with indifference or derision. Study of the peace movement in prewar Germany points out the tension that existed between pursuit of national interest and the establishment of some effective form of international organization. In many respects, the German encounter with this problem parallel our own today.
