20th Century American Feminism: Woman Thinkers and Popular View Through Magazines

Research will ultimately be used in grantee's course "The Woman in American History." Study will include information on 1) immigrant and radical women in the IWW, 2) the thoughts and activities of early 20th century working class women in their efforts to organize, their relationship, if any, to middle class women in oraganizations such as Women's Trade Union League 3) an analysis of selected autobiographies, memoirs, and works of fiction of women academics, writers and organizers for insights into their attitudes and values regarding womanhood, and 4) a content analysis of articles in popular magazines from 1920-60 to determine the popular image of American women.
