The Pastoral in European Literature

To study European pastoral, primarily Renaissance literature, but in related disciplines and periods as well. In teaching the English Renaissance an in "explaining" literature to the general student, applicant expects to enhance his ability to convey the relations of the humanities to culture at large. Examples used will include not only Socrates and St. Thomas More but more contemporary types such as Charlie Chaplin and the ragged campus saint. This study of the pastoral can help clarify in some way the continuity of the past and present dilemmas in the life of the West.
