Themes of Social Responsibility in 19th Century Aesthetics

A critical analysis of the aesthetic theories of the middle of the nineteenth century that focus on the role of art and the artist in society. Artists considered include Comte, Taine, Guyau, Ruskin, the pre-Raphaelites, and Morris. Such questions as the moral and social responsibility of artists are examined in this study.
