David R. Ringrose
University of California, San Diego (La Jolla, CA 92093-0013)

Madrid and the Economic and Social Development of Spain, 1560-1860

To demonstrate how history can be made a more effective tool for understanding modern society, as the last few years have seen renewed interest in the role of cities in creating the conditions which allowed the industrial revolution in Europe. Mr. Ringrose suggests that economic change is more complex than many economic historians assume and requires social and political as well as economic analysis.
