To publish a study of Machiavellism and the political secrecy in the Renaissance, analyzing the borrowings from Machiavelli by Stephen Gardiner and their application to Anglo-Spanish politics, and setting Gardiner's work in the context of the many other covert means by which Machiavelli's ideas were transmitted in the Renaissance. Focus will be on why this was done: why Machiavellian thought was so often kept secret, even before the Church had condemned him. Parallels between physical science and political thought must be explored. Studies such as this one may help clarify the relation between science and humanities, a relation as problematic today as it was in the Renaissance.
