The Lament in Venetian Opera of the Seventeenth Century

To study the lament in Venetian opera as a means of 1) gaining a precise measure of the increasing separation between music and drama that characterizes the development of Baroque opera; 2) examining the power of music to communicate emotion; 3) acquiring an overal view of the style of Francesco Cavalli, the most important and prolific opera composer in Venice from 1640-1660.
