The Modern Grotesque: Study of a Phenomenon in Twentieth Century Fiction

To write a book on the grotesque in modern fiction, the purpose of the study being twofold: first, to relate the modern grotesque to previous manifestations of the grotesque in art and literature; second, to isolate and define those aspects of the modern grotesque that are uniquely and characteristically modern.
