High and Low Culture in Ireland, the Relationship of the Traditional Sector to Intellectual Nationalism

Intellectual Nationalism This is a study of high and low culture in Ireland; the relationship of the traditional sector to intellectual nationalism. (Applicant teaches a course entitled "Writers and Politics," which deals with the impact of the writers, poets, and antiquarians of the Irish Cultural Renaissance upon the Irish National Movement.) This project proposes to develop a more detailed picture of this rural society, and to examine what linkages there were between the high and popular culture of this period and to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between the character of rural society and the main currents of Irish political change.
