Popular Culture and Social Realities in Urban Spain, 1885-1914

The study will attempt to define the social realities of the urban lower classes in Spain during the period of formative urbanization, 1885-1914. Spain was out of phase with other European countries (except Portugal), undergoing the stresses of industrialization and rural to urban migrations some fifty years after such "growing pains" had occurred elsewhere. During the period under examination, the existential pressures brought to bear on the lower classes, particularly the uprooted migrants to the cities, were immense. The study will also consist of an attempt to examine the values of the lower classes as expressed in their use leisure, in the workers' movements, and in religious expression.
