Vergil's Humanism: Its Nature and Limits; An Investigation of Aeneid 7-12

To study the humanistic ideas and ideals in Vergil's Aeneid. particularly in his treatment of Aeneas' encounters with Turnus and the Italian tribes in Books 7-12, and to examine the degree to which Vergil's commitment to such humane ideals as compassion and mercy (his "private voice") might have come into conflict with his allegiance to the Augustan programme (his "public voice").
