Metatheatre in the Plays of Tirso de Molina

"Metaplays' have been described as works of dramatic imagination which deal with "life seen as already theatricalized." PI proposes to apply this theory to the theatre of Tirso de Molina, the creator of Don Juan and other characters who seem to exemplify dramatic imagination in practive. PI is especially interested in Tirso's female protagonists who transcend the boundaries usually associated with 'masculine' female characters in 17th century theatre and who seem to represent purely imaginative, androgynous beings.
