William Grant Still in New York
I propose to research a book manuscript, "William Grant Still in New York." I plan to complete research initiated in 1990 and begin writing a biography of his years spent in New York. My focus is on his musical and aesthetic development as a composer shaped by both American and international modernism and by the Harlem Renaissance, which was both a movement of self-conscious culture definition and an early 20th century Civil Rights movement.
