This project involves the first critical edition and the first ever translation of the Armenian commentaries on the historical books of the Bible, Joshua to I-II Chronicles, traditionally attributed to Ephrem the Syrian. Each of these two volumes will have its own extensive introduction, primarily to set out the textual history of the work, and to set these commentaries into their proper historical and literary context. The translation will include substantial annotation in an attempt to bring to light both the dependence of these commentaries on earlier Syriac and Armenian commentary literature, and their originality that so influenced later Armenian commentaries.
