Pocahontas Among the Jacobeans
I am applying to the NEH for a fellowship to complete a book called POCAHONTAS AMONG THE JACOBEANS which examines Pocahontas's powerful effects on English conceptualizations of colonialism. This book takes a figure of crucial significance to foundational histories of the United States and, by examining her encounters in England, reveals how her presence sharpened Jacobean articulations of a hierarchy based on race rather than rank.
