Early Liturgy, History, and the Arts at Saint-Denis under Abbot Suger, 1121-1151

I seek NEH funding to support the completion of my interdisciplinary book, Past as Promise: History, Liturgy, and the Arts under Abbot Suger of Saint-Denis. Though remembered as a historian, regent of France, and patron of Gothic art and architecture, Suger, abbot from 1121-1151, was also a liturgist and liturgical commentator, who aimed to connect his contemporaries and successors to the memory of the past through firsthand experiences with liturgy and the arts and through their critical interpretation in text. This book expands our view of Suger’s well-known artistic, historical, and political contributions by rooting them in the abbey's musical liturgies and ritualized histories. It details Suger’s virtually unrecognized but critical contributions to the abbey’s liturgies and shows how they informed his artistic and political-historical agendas. The book resonates with debates today over history, identity, religion and politics, and the relevance of the arts and humanities.
