Development of an Integrated Curriculum with Urban Concentration

Bishop College developing an interdisciplinary curriculum in the social sciences geared toward a concentration in urban studies. Funds to support faculty development and development of integrated curriculum through conference with representatitves from Texas Association of Developing Colleges. Consultants from larger universities in north Texas directors of urban affairs programs will be employed as consultants. ABSTRACT: Since 1910 there has been a large migration of blacks from South to North, within the south from rural to urban areas. Probably 70% of US black population now living in cities. In belief that black students should be better prepared to meet and deal effectively with urban social problems, Bishop College plans to develop an interdisciplinary curriculum in the social sciences with a concentration in urban studies. Entire faculty in Division of Social Sciences to be involved in project which will include a conference with representatives from institutuions in the Texas Association of Developing Colleges, a group of small private colleges. In addition, consultants from larger universities in north Texas and directors of urban affairs programs will be employed to advise on curriculum development. Project will have effects beyond the college itself. Funds for Conference Director; travel, per diem, honoraria for consultants; secretarial servies, supplies.
